We're Hiring! MiningWatch Canada Seeks Accounting Services

Position: Accountant

Term: One-year contract, part-time (average 12 hours/month), with possibility of renewal

Location: Ottawa and environs (work is mostly remote but with in-person component)

Compensation: $35-40 hourly, depending on experience

Starting date: January 3, 2022

ABOUT THE ROLE: 

The Accountant will provide management of accounts of MiningWatch Canada and its sister organisation, the Canary Research Institute for Mining, Environment, and Health. The Accountant will keep both organizations aligned with provincial and federal tax laws, track income and expenses, and manage accounts payable and receivable. The  Accountant will report to the Fundraising & Operations Coordinator.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Accounting

  • Tracking and managing financial data (20-25 transactions/month on average)
  • Post journal entries
  • Keep financial records and establish, maintain and balance various accounts using manual and computerized bookkeeping systems
  • Maintain general ledgers and financial statements
  • Ensure all statutory requirements are met related to GST/HST compliance and filings
  • Reconcile accounts and prepare trial balance of books
  • Prepare annual federal returns (T2 Corporation Income Tax Return, T3010 Registered Charity Information Return, T1044 Non-Profit Organization Information Return, etc.)

Audit

  • Support audits for MiningWatch Canada, its projects, and the Canary Research Institute
  • Prepare working papers for annual year-end audits
  • Liaise with external auditors as required

Budgeting

  • Input and maintain budget information into the accounting system

Financial Reporting

  • Generate forecasts and cashflow projections for quarterly Finance Committee meetings
  • Prepare other statistical, financial and accounting reports
  • Prepare tax returns
  • Prepare T4s and ROEs
  • Prepare for the year-end financial reporting and reconciliations
  • Produce financial reports to funders, co-management team and Boards of Directors
  • Notify co-managers of any accounting errors

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A relevant post-secondary degree or certificate in Accounting
  • Five years of proven experience in a similar role, preferably in the non-profit sector
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in Canada and auditing standards
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks and advanced skills in spreadsheets
  • Proven experience in preparing personal and corporate taxes in Ontario and Quebec
  • The ability to work on multiple tasks while adhering to tight deadlines
  • The ability to communicate complex financial data with other members
