Going Upstream: The impact of industrial mining on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation

Brief prepared for the country visit of the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, Pedro Arrojo-Agudo.

Since 1999, MiningWatch has provided technical expertise and advocacy support to hundreds of communities across the globe as they assert their rights to safe drinking water and sanitation in the face of imminent and past harm by industrial mining.

Our experience, over more than 20 years, is that every community facing industrial mining will, at some point, experience some or all the impacts summarized in this brief. In this brief, we provide more detailed examples to shed light on the human and environmental cost of these impacts, and lay out important recommendations for action to better protect the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation – recommendations we urge the Special Rapporteur to take into consideration when he visits Canada in 2024.
