MiningWatch's Canada Program Co-Lead Rodrigue Turgeon speaks to the National about the race to mine for lithium in La Corne, Quebec, and the opposition to Sayona Mining.
Berlinda Wabegijig is a teacher at the local school in the Anishinaabe community of Winneway, near Lac Simard where Sayona hopes to build another lithium mine. She says, “It’s a small lake, but it also has a lot of value to the people of Winneway. If we were to have a mine, then a lot of people would lose connection to their land — that’s a threat to people’s healings, to people’s lifestyles, to our culture, to our values.”
