The federal government’s decision to place Ontario’s Crawford Nickel Project on its new list of “nation-building” projects is raising concerns from experts who say Ottawa is moving ahead while serious financial, market and environmental risks remain unresolved.

Crawford is already in the middle of a federal impact assessment that began in late 2024 and still has another year to go. The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada has directed Canada Nickel, the project proponent, to address “issues related to wildlife, fish habitat and water quality.”
