Lac Simon Chief Lucien Wabanonik stands looking over a sea of rock core samples a mining company left on his community’s territory.

Work at this proposed mine has been at a standstill for weeks.

Wabanonik smiles as a large visitor walks by — one he hasn’t seen on the many visits he’s had at this mine.

“The first time I see a moose here,” he says as the moose looks back at him.

The Novador open pit gold mine project is happening on Lac Simon First Nation’s ancestral territory, about 400 kilometres north of Ottawa.
