Finally! New National Inventory for Orphaned and Abandoned Mine Sites

(Ottawa) While MiningWatch Canada is pleased that the National Orphaned and Abandoned Mining Initiative (NOAMI) has finally released the first, pan-Canadian inventory of contaminated mine sites just this week, the organisation is also concerned that key provinces and territories are missing from the inventory.

Indigenous Women from Papua New Guinea Appeal to Government of Canada for Help Obtaining Remedy for Ongoing Human Rights Abuses at Barrick Mine

(Ottawa) Two women who have suffered sexual violence at the hands of mine security at Barrick’s massive Porgera Joint Venture mine in Papua New Guinea appealed directly to the Government of Canada today. They seek help in accessing equitable remedy for the mining-related harm they and other villagers are suffering.

Landmark Decision: Quebec Court Approves Class Suit Against Gold Giant Canadian Malartic

(Malartic, Quebec) Malartic community members living closest to the biggest open pit mine next to city in Canada are pleased with today’s Quebec Superior Court authorizing a class action suit for damages they suffer from the dust, noise and daily blasts for years. The Court gave its ‘go-ahead’ for a suit which could amount to more than $40 million, including $20 million in exemplary damages against some of the company's behaviour. The mine is co-owned by Agnico Eagle & Yamana Gold.

Background: Indigenous Ipili Women Speak Out at Barrick AGM 2017

Barrick’s directors and shareholders heard first-hand about excess use of force by private and public mine security guarding the Porgera Joint Venture mine in Papua New Guinea when indigenous Ipili men travelled to Canada to speak out at Barrick’s AGM. In 2008, 2009, and 2010 Ipili men stood up in the shareholder’s meeting and told company directors and shareholders about killings and rapes of local men, women and children by mine security. These allegations were repeatedly met with denial by Barrick.
