Canada Pushes More Mining During PDAC 2022, Even as Indigenous Leaders are Detained in Ecuador

Despite widespread opposition to mining in Ecuador, government officials and Canadian Ambassador Sylvie Bédard rubbed shoulders with industry representatives during "Ecuador Day" at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada's (PDAC) annual conference in Toronto yesterday. Promoting faster environmental permitting and a rushed Indigenous consultation process, both the Canadian and Ecuadorian governments are pushing an agenda of massive mineral extraction in the South American country.

'Rapid development' of mines 'urgently required' – Canada's resources minister

Accelerating mine development could be a pressing issue for the country's left-leaning Liberal Party government as it looks to support the energy transition, said Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources.

Wilkinson's call to action at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada conference in Toronto on mine timelines is a rare example of a top Liberal official calling for the need to fast-track more Canadian mining projects, after the government has made critical minerals a priority in recent years.

Barrick facing new allegations of contamination near Veladero mine in Argentina

Toronto-headquartered Barrick Gold Corp. is once again facing accusations that its high-altitude Veladero mine in Argentina is releasing toxins into the local water supply — after similar incidents years ago spurred the country to pass legislation and forced the mine to temporarily close.

The world is changing and all governments must fight the climate crisis and ensure economic development benefits everyone, including Indigenous Peoples, Canada's prime minister said Monday as Chile pushes ahead with reforms to its mining sector.
